Description: This course will expand our treatment of the non-western areas of the world, and of the 20th century. The course deals with the countries of Asia and Africa particularly, with some reference to South America and the Caribbean. An understanding of how these countries were shaped by the experience of colonialism and the process of independence in the 20th century will be valuable to students in our increasingly linked world. The students will have the opportunity to consider the religious and social implications, particularly in light of the large number of Christians in the parts of the world that were formerly European colonies, and the fact that much missionary and aid work is focussed on countries which were formerly European colonies. The tensions over language, westernization, neo- colonialism and identity will be considered.
